Portofino and San fruttuoso
Situated 8 km from Rapallo, Portofino, small seaside village, known and made famous in the world for its scenic beauty and its "Piazzetta". Many international VIPs visit it, especially in summer.
In Portofino you can visit the Church of San Giorgio, the Castle ""Brown", the lighthouse and the Church of "Divo Martino" and go shopping in the numerous chic boutiques.
The Christ of the Abyss is immersed in the waters of San Fruttuoso, the Marine Protected Area of Portofino. The statue is placed at more than 15 meters deep and was laid on the seabed in 1954, by the diver Duilio Marcante, to commemorate his friend Dario Gonzatti, who died during a dive a few years earlier.
The sculpture is 2.5 meters high and weighs 260 kg. Composed by the merger of medals of sailors and athletes, bells, cannons, naval elements and even propellers of submarines Americans donated by the U.S. Navy.
The Christ of the Abyss has become a destination for scuba diving.
You can also be seen, in the southern part, walls covered with coral and sponges, while, not far from the beach, about 18 meters deep, there are the remains of the Croesus, a British steamship used during the Crimean War.
